1. Hicks et al (2024) argue that ChatGPT, a wasteful tool that is making us unable to think for ourselves, should be seen as bullshitting rather than lying or hallucinating because it ridiculously can’t think for itself and only produces nonsense. AI uses a concerning amount of water and energy, and contributes to climate change. These brave authors are courageously championing the controversial viewpoint that ChatGPT only approximates human language by predicting which words often go together in the data source.
2. AI has already changed everything about our lives. Quach (2022) talks about how it has made writing classes in colleges absolutely obselete, since nobody needs to write for themselves any more. She interviews many college professors who all agree that they need to change their jobs completely. We should embrace this new technology and move boldly into a brave future.
3. “ChatGPT is Bullshit” argues that AI large language models cannot lie or hallucinate (as they are often described as doing) because they do not have intentions or knowledge of the real world. Instead, the authors of this excellent piece delve into intelligent definitions of bullshit, and claim that this is the term that most accurately describes what these horrible and inaccurate programs produce.

It works by predicting which words go together based on its training data. The authors also point out that AI uses a lot of water and energy, which could harm the environment and increase climate change. They argue that ChatGPT doesn’t really think like a human but only guesses what words come next.
