BUSI 5413 Understanding and Applying Sampling Procedures

Explain systematic random sampling, then choose ONE of the prompts below and apply your understanding of the topic thoroughly.  Your initial thread should be 300 to 400 words (see Notes).

For each prompt, include a personal example or an example you find in a reliable publication (see Notes).

Everyone, please respond to this topic:

  • What is systematic random sampling, and how is it accomplished?  Describe an example.

Choose ONE of the following topics:

  • Explain the proximal similarity model with an example.
  • Define the theoretical and accessible populations and explain how they are related, describing an example.
  • What is purposive sampling? Illustrate with an example.
  • What are snowball and respondent-driven sampling, and how are they related?  Describing with an example.

Post your initial Thread and attach a Word document of your work (see Notes).

The Replies – Each reply (x2) must be 100 to 200 words (see Notes).

You are required to write substantive replies to a minimum of two of your classmate’s initial thread.  In contrast to superficial replies, substantive replies add value to the discussion, enhance learning, and contain references to any new concepts or ideas presented.

The following suggestions will aid you in successfully composing substantive responses:

  • Compare/contrast the findings of others with your research or experience.
  • Compare how the findings of others enhance to the concepts learned in the required readings.
  • Share additional knowledge regarding the topic that relates to the thread.

Assignment Notes:

  • Examples of reliable publications may include Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Barron’s, Retail Business News, etc.  Online sources are acceptable if correctly cited, and a link is included.  APA in-text citations and references are required.  Wikipedia is not considered a reliable publication.  You may not use the examples already provided in the study materials or your classmate’s threads.
  • Failing to meet word count requirements will be penalized.  There is no advantage to exceeding the word count suggestions.  Titles, Bible references, quotes, scripture, title page, abstract, references, citations, and reference pages cannot fulfill word count requirements.
  • Excellent grammar, spelling, and APA (7e) formatting are expected in graduate-level work.

Solution Understanding and Applying Sampling Procedures

What is systematic random sampling and how is it accomplished?

ANSWER:  Systematic random sampling is a sampling method where you determine randomly where you want to start selecting in a sampling frame list and then follow a rule to select every xth element in the list (where the ordering of the list is assumed to be random—it should be ensured that there is no cyclical or periodic element to the ordering of elements in the sampling frame). This method is also sometimes called interval random sampling.

To achieve a systematic random sample, follow these steps:

1. Number the units in the population from 1 to N.

2. Decide on the n (sample size) that you want or need.

3. Calculate k = N/n = the interval size.

4. Randomly select an integer between 1 and k as the starting point.

5. Take every kth unit.
