Discussion Question 2 – covering Lectures 3 and 4

As we cover the transition from formalist to realist film theory, which of these do you find more convincing in terms of articulating how films should be made and/or experienced? Which kind of films do you prefer and why?

Solution

The clips for the lectures this week really showed how editing can be an integral part of film making and telling a story. While watching the clips from Battleship Potemkin, the editing of the crew in the film helped the understanding of what was going on. You can see the revolt building and understand the mutiny. The montage of the Odessa steps is done in such a way that establishes the fear and chaos that was unfolding. It starts with calm happy children and that is quickly turned to fear and panic. The shots were edited in such a way that you could see the people running from the soldiers or militia, running to the church?, and the loss of hope. The emotion that was brought from the child being shot, crying out for their parent was heart wrenching but the shots of the crowd, continuing to surge down the stairs and trampling the child, added to it and was very powerful. 

Yes, I agree. Editing seems integral to film making due to the fact that it creates something like a story, coherence of parts, collision of other parts, and poetry. Editing gives film makers the power to decide on how they want to portray their film and allows them to experiment on how they want to excite the viewers (ex. whether or not a certain scene makes sense to add into the plot of the movie)… ..Please click on the Icon below to purchase the full answer at only $10
