Development of effective communication is a fundamental skill for nurses for therapeutic and professional relationships. By exploring and examining group dynamics and through presentation and role playing, you will be able to integrate learned communications strategies.

  • This group assignment relates to the following General Learning Outcomes:
  • Examine the fundamentals of communication and interpersonal relationships.
  • Describe effective communication strategies used in interpersonal relationships.
  • Examine concepts of communication climates, groups, teams, conflict and conflict management, and intimidation in health care.
  • Examine best practices and effective communication strategies to develop and maintain the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship.

Instructions

Assignment 5.A: Outline

  • Assignment 5.A will be completed as a group.
  • Review the Rubric (attached at the bottom of instructions) for detailed expectations and breakdown of marks.
  • All components in the outline will be compiled into a single video presentation for Assignment 5.B.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY AND CONNECT WITH ASSIGNED GROUP MEMBERS (as completed in A0: Student Group Agreement)

  1. You will be randomly assigned to a group of 4-5 students at your instructor’s discretion.
    •  If you have concerns about working with your group, please discuss with your instructor.
  2. Connect with your group and set up a regular meeting pattern.
    • Your groups can meet in-person, over the phone, MS Teams, Zoom, WhatsApp, or an alternative source of your choosing to work on the assignment.
  3. MANDATORY: Complete the Student Group Agreement (attached at the bottom of instructions) as a group. This is a fillable Word Document.
    • The purpose of the Student Group Agreement is to help the group identify expectations of each other. This can improve group dynamics and prevent conflicts.
    • You do not need to submit this document, but you should refer to it if any conflicts arise.
    • If you are having unresolved conflict within the group, please email your instructor with a copy of your Student Group Agreement, specific behaviours and steps taken to resolve the concern, and what the group members have decided would be the best course of action to take moving forward.

STEP 2: COMPLETE PRESENTATION OUTLINE

  1. Complete the Outline (attached at the bottom of instructions). This is a fillable Word Document.
    • The purpose of the outline is to plan out the required parts of your presentation and make sure the group is on the right track.
    • Responses may need a citation.

STEP 3: SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT

  1. Correctly name the completed Outline document.
    • Name your assignment “NCOM 1000-Assignment 5.A-GroupLetter”
      • E.g., NCOM 1000-Assignment 5.A-GroupA
  2. Upload the file to this dropbox. You must click the submission button two times.
    • First click submits the assignment as a “DRAFT” (cannot be marked – late penalties may apply)
    • Second click submits the assignment for marking (can be marked)
    • Only one submission is needed for each group.
  3. Review instructor feedback and apply it to Assignment 5.B: Presentation.
