For this solution, the article chosen is Disease and the Undead.
Section A: Quotations & Evidence
1. What is the main point or thesis statement of the article?
The article’s main point is that “the belief in vampires and related practices arose from a lack of understanding about infectious diseases and the decomposition process of the human body” (Buhler, 2019).
2. What evidence does the author provide to support that point? Provide three different examples of key supporting points or pieces of evidence.
Evidence #1: One key example provided is that “bacteria in the body produce gas, causing the abdomen to swell and look bloated, sometimes forcing blood from the lungs to trickle out of the mouth” (Buhler, 2019).
Evidence #2: Another point is that “people buried the first victims of epidemics but blamed vampires for later outbreaks because they didn’t understand that microscopic pathogens required an incubation period” (Buhler, 2019).
Evidence #3: A third example mentions that “suspected vampires were often individuals who had died from violent causes, or who were victims of the first wave of a communicable disease” (Buhler, 2019).
